Then I remembered reading about a system of plywood straps that someone had used in building a geodesic dome. Initially, though, I had no idea how I could connect the pieces of each truss together so that they’d be held rigidly in the proper configuration. I’d planned to start by making a dozen or so gambrel-shaped frames or trusses out of 2-by-6 lumber. Here, briefly, is how the trusses (and the gambrel roof formed from them) went together: Research and Planning What I ultimately devised was an easy-to-work-with system of lightweight trusses that could be built flat on the ground, then erected atop the cabin and covered with exterior plywood. Rather than give up, however, I decided to try to simplify the construction of the gambrel I wanted.
What I had in mind, in other words, was a fine project for an army of engineers, but one that was probably beyond the capabilities of two non-professionals (such as Jim - my building partner - and myself). Some background reading soon taught me, however, that a conventional barn-sized gambrel is a nightmare of purlin beams, ridge beams and dovetail joints.
And besides that, I like the looks of gambrel roofs. Not only would the gambrel’s steep side pitch give the cabin ample upstairs room, I reasoned, but the double-sloping design would make more efficient use of roofing materials than a giant A frame ever could.

Gambrel roof rafters assembly Tiny house construction guide During the gambrel roof framing construction, it is crucial to make sure that all the crucial connections at critical conjunctions are strong and secured enough to provide safe support. Thermal insulation and vapor barrier are installed underneath them, while on top an exterior roofing layer such as roof shingles, corrugated metal sheets or others are attached. Important steps of how to build a gambrel roof are: preparing all timber roof framing pieces using strong framing connectors such as metal fasteners, placing the assembled roof rafters in their right positions, joining them with the horizontal battens and strengthen with roof sheeting made usually of OSB or plywood boards. The construction of gambrel roof does not need to be complicated at all. The roof sheeting, insulating and external cladding layers are placed on top of the frame. On the sides, the gables ends are filled with horizontal and vertical timber studs roof framing. The individual roof rafters are held in a place and together with horizontal roof battens and blocking, connected at the top with ridge board and attached at its both ends to the wall beams sitting on top of the walls. The main reason behind this slightly unusual shape is a need to gain more space in the attic, while not increasing the overall height of the roof. The gambrel roof trusses are symmetrical and their shape in elevation could be described as one half of an asymmetrical octagon: on each side the truss has two slopes, the one on top is at a shallow angle, the other one is longer and steeper. Together with the traditional gable roof and often seen shed roof, gambrel roof is also a common type of roof both for small house plans as well as bigger houses, barns and other buildings.
